You may or may not know but right now I've been trying to put together another ecommerce site....During my process of building this site I need to get some live chat software.....I came across a company that offers this live chat software at a really cheap price....I know why now...Their gaming their paid customers to hoard links and rank high in Google.....

The free live chat software and paid software both have links in the live chat button....however only the free version you can visually see the text link....but when you purchase the software it disappears only to be placed in the code....You can't modify the code in anyway or the software wont work....so when many many people come to volusion and pick up the free and paid version of the software volusion is getting a backlink...

I picked up the free version at first just to see....then I thought about it and say no...I dont want a link to them on my site....well this is what I thought anyway....

As you can see the paid version says it...no text link under click to chat icon....So I assumed since I was paying for this service that I would not be giving volusion a link....however ....it is very misleading....notice the phrase no text link....yeh when you buy the software your not giving them a text link...but your still giving them a link...they just hid the link in the code....So now all the free and paid customers they get will be giving them one of the two links.... free live chat software...and live chat software....both keywords their ranking #1 and #2 in Google....Now I can see getting a link for the free software since your providing a free service...and it plainly says that it will have a text link in it....But the paid version! The paid version still has a link but it's not text.....So their gaming all of their paid customers by using a misleading phrase..such as no text link under live chat icon....In my eyes I figured their would be no link ....I wasn't thinking they was hoarding these links in the code.....

So is this ethical, does it have a editorial process? Well it is very boarder line....With the sneaky wording.....they should atleast tell people that your not giving a text link but a link in the code....but just think of the all the links their getting....almost 2 million links....what a way to game your customers with sneaky coded links you can't modify....but I have a feeling that they'll get slapped by Google  .......  :)

I would dump that company
I refuse to deal with any company that uses dirty methods to get links.

Nice find! I would sat it's a little underhanded on their part. I vote "not cool".

I can understand them doing this on the free version, but this is very sneaky on the paid version. They should at least let you know BEFORE you buy the paid version and then it would be up to you to decide if you want to pay for it when really they should be paying you for the link on your page!

If you download most forum software for free you have to maintain the link, the only difference is it's not clear that they are making you do it.

Nice find. I came from DP. This is really spamming of newbies...

I don't see a problem with that. They are still giving something free. The paid version should not have any link however.

Interesting Article, very good find.
Maybe if they say you can get the free version by having a link on your site, then it would be ok.

Not impressed what that. Sneaky way of gettings link. Unethical I think. Paid one shouldnt still have links.
Still, good find and nice to be aware of these tricks.

Why did I just spend 2 min. reading this? Of course they are getting back links from this. You seem more jealous that you didn't think of it first than anything..

lots of software sites do this and have been doing it for years. Why is this some kind of "big news" today? Just because YOU just now figured it out?
Wow. Welcome to the internet.

Let me tell you something buddy...I've been online for years now...and of course i know this stuff is going on...but I just wanted to oust this company and let everyone know about it...and you obviously spent 2 min reading this because you thought it was interesting or was interested in it....

The point I was getting across was is that it's fine if your getting it FREE but when you pay for the shit and they HIDE the link in the code so you think it isnt their than it's BS...welcome to MY WORLD

So the reference at dp to Matt Cutts was because he's responsible for the link busting algo? Or because it's a great pull to get people to read?

Scams like this about and are why you do your due diligence before spending your dosh - it's sneaky and downright wrong.

Good on you for outing them!
